Russia wants to leave UEFA and join the AFC?

Jakarta – Russian football is being sanctioned by UEFA — and FIFA. Related to this, there are rumors that Russia wants to leave UEFA and join the Asian football confederation, AFC.

Russia’s invasion of Ukraine also had an impact on the sporting aspect, with all Russian clubs and the country’s national team not allowed to participate in competitions under the auspices of UEFA and FIFA

The sanctions were released by UEFA and FIFA in a joint statement in February. The sentence is valid indefinitely.

In recent times, rumors have emerged that the Russian Football Federation is considering the possibility of splitting up with UEFA and joining the AFC in Asia.

There has been no official statement regarding this. But the Russian website Championat is trying to explore that possibility by asking famous figures like Andrei Kanchelskis.

Kanchelskis, who in his career played for Manchester United, has 36 caps with the Russian national team. The 53-year-old figure himself was born in Kirovohrad, during the Soviet Union era, which is now part of Ukraine.

“(Russia joins) the Asian Football Confederation? I don’t know if it can happen,” Kanchelskis told Championat, as quoted by Marca.

“If the Asian football confederation is a possible option for Russia, why not? I’ve worked in Asia (and) played in Saudi Arabia. For me it would be interesting to see such games,” he said, referring to his time with Al Hilal at Al Hilal. 2003.

If Russia does consider joining the AFC, the country’s clubs will appear in the Asian Champions League and AFC Cup, instead of the UEFA Champions League and Europa League. The Russian national team will also not play in the European Cup but will be involved in the Asian Cup.
